On March 3, 2008, at around 4:40 p.m., while they were picking up the week’s proceeds, two Garda officers were attacked by men armed with machine-guns. One of the officers was grabbed and thrown onto the ground by a suspect, who hit him in the face before stealing his keys, while trying to disarm him. The suspects fired several shots at the armoured vehicle. The investigation that followed showed that, while shots were being exchanged, one of the suspects, Martin Trempe, was injured. Most of Martin Trempe’s accomplices were arrested on November 19, 2008. However, Martin Trempe is still at large.
Martin Trempe is wanted for attempt to commit murder, possession of a prohibited firearm and conspiracy.
